What is a diesel scrappage scheme?

A diesel scrappage scheme is a monetary incentive offered by big vehicle manufacturers with the aim to encourage you to scrap your diesel car with them to reduce environmental impact. The following manufacturers have all been known to offer diesel scrappage schemes previously: Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Citroen, Dacia, Fiat, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, MG, Renault, Peugeot, Seat, Skoda, Vauxhall, Volkswagen, Suzuki and Toyota.

With between 28,000 and 36,000 deaths a year in the UK alone attributed to air pollution, it’s no surprise companies are creating incentives to help reduce the impact their products create, particularly with diesel cars being one of the biggest contributors.

However, there’s a catch, unlike our scrappage scheme, these manufacturers offer monetary incentives for your older model which produces high emissions, to be used against a newer model which produces lower emissions.

The aim of the diesel scrappage scheme is to help make models which may usually be unaffordable to the customer, more affordable, while incentivising you to dispose of your old vehicle with high emissions. The value is calculated from the worth of the vehicle for scrap combined with the discount the manufacturer can offer. The amount would then be used against a down payment on another car that they sell.

Although, there’s also a catch with which car you can use this down payment on, and this is down to manufacturer choice. Some may offer ten models to choose from, others may offer five, so this too can limit choice. On top of this, although you may be tempted by a large monetary incentive, the vehicle you can redeem this against may still be out of budget.

Diesel scrappage schemes have also come under fire for just how much they are actually making a positive environmental impact. Some manufacturers don’t guarantee to scrap your car and resell them instead, meaning they’re back on the road in no time and no emissions have been reduced. The schemes are also not government sponsored and have been raised as a tactic to simply improve car sales. Whereas here at Scrapping A Car, you can have complete piece of mind that your car has been scrapped and you are lessening environmental impact, as we will provide you with an official DVLA Certificate of Destruction as proof that the vehicle has been scrapped in line with government regulations.

So why not still capitalise on these schemes and get the best price for your vehicle by using us instead? You don’t have to buy a new car, you can choose how you spend your money and you can rest assured your vehicle will be scrapped in line with government regulations. We will also accept a vehicle of any age and condition.
