Where can you collect my vehicle from?

We can collect vehicles from across London and surrounding areas. For our full list of collection locations, please see here (link to location page once uploaded to website). We just need to be able to have clear access for our recovery vehicle. Whether your car is at your home address, work, somebody else’s house or at a storage compound, we can collect it. The only place we cannot collect from is roadside or at a service station, as we do not operate roadside recovery.

Is collection free?

Yes, all of our collections are free as standard. This means that the price you are quoted for your vehicle, if the price you will receive, guaranteed, with no hidden costs.

Can you collect any type of vehicle?

Yes, we are an Authorised Treatment Facility meaning we have the ability to collect vehicles of any size in any condition. From motorcycles to lorries, our collection service covers any vehicle.

Do I need to organise the collection of my vehicle?

No, we want the process to be as quick, easy and simple as possible for you so we handle the collection process for you. Once you accept your quote, we will be in touch with you to arrange collection at a date and time that is mutually convenient.

How soon can you collect my car?

We aim to arrange collection as soon as possible after you have decided you are happy with your quote. We try to contact you on the same or following day. Once we contact you, we will discuss our collection options and ensure it is at a mutually suitable date and time. Depending on our availability, our collection period can be anything from within a few hours up to a few days, but we will always try to collect your vehicle as soon as possible.

Who will pick up my vehicle?

A member of the Scrapping A Car team with years of knowledge and expertise will be picking up your vehicle. This means you can rest assured that you are in good hands and you don’t have to worry about third-party transporters.

How will I know it’s your driver that comes to collect?

As we operate all of our own recovery vehicles, you don’t need to worry about a third party turning up at collection. We will have pre-arranged your collection with you directly and our driver will have your collection details to hand. If for any reason you are in doubt, you can call us on 0203 870 2545 and we will be happy to help.

Do I need to provide any documentation when you collect my vehicle?

We ask for you to provide your photo ID and a utility bill with proof of address. This is part of the checks that we do in line with the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 to combat rogue traders.

Do I need to be present when you collect my vehicle?

No, we do not require the registered keeper or the legal owner of the vehicle to be present at the time of collection. We do however require a person present with a signed note from the vehicle owner stating they have been instructed to act of their behalf. We also ask for this person to have a form of photo ID and a recent utility bill.

How long will the collection take?

Once you have accepted your quote, we aim to arrange collection as soon as possible. We always book our collections on a date that is suitable for you and sometimes this can even be the same day. However, the collection process can be dependent on individual factors such as the condition of your vehicle, whether it has keys, if the location is accessible. You can be assured that here at Scrapping A Car we are industry experts and we will make the collection process as streamlined as possible.

Can I change the date of my collection?

If you need to change the date we have arranged to collect your vehicle, please get in touch with us as soon as possible.

Can you collect my vehicle at a specific time?

We will always try our best to collect within a set time period. As we often have multiple collections within the same day, sometimes the collection time can change due to unforeseen circumstances. However, we will always keep you up to date and if possible, we will let you know when we are nearby.

What days do you collect?

We work seven days a week. We always aim to collect the vehicle at a time that is mutually convenient, if you have particular requirements, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate them.

What are the requirements for where my car needs to be?

Your car isn’t required to be at your home address and it isn’t required to be on a public road. We do ask that the vehicle is on stable ground that our recovery vehicle can easily access. If your car is in a difficult location that we will struggle to access, please let us know about this beforehand. This way we can try our best to accommodate you and bring the correct equipment to allow us to retrieve the vehicle in a timely and efficient manner.

What if the driver doesn’t turn up when they said they would?

In rare cases, unforeseen circumstances can cause delays to collection timings. In the event of any significant delays, we will always try to contact you beforehand to let you know. If you haven’t heard from the driver and you are experiencing a delay, please contact us on 0203 870 2545 and we will try to solve the situation as soon as possible.

Does my car need to be cleaned before collection?

We don’t expect the car to be waxed and polished, but we would appreciate it if the car didn’t have personal items or rubbish left in it upon collection, this helps make the process as quick, easy and simple as possible for everybody involved.

Are your prices guaranteed?

Yes, our prices are guaranteed subject to inspection. As long as you have accurately described your vehicle, the price you are quoted is the price you will receive.

How long is my quote guaranteed for?

Your quote is guaranteed for ten days regardless of market fluctuations. This means if the market suddenly places a lower value on scrap metal you will still receive the price you were originally quoted. We understand these decisions take time and that’s why we guarantee your quote for ten days, this is much longer than many of our competitors.

When will I get paid?

We make payment within 24 hours of your vehicle being collected.

Will I have to pay anything?

No, using Scrapping A Car to sell your vehicle is completely free, from the minute you get a quote through to our free collection service. There are no hidden fees or nasty surprises.

What makes Scrapping A Car prices so competitive?

As we are the end buyer of your vehicle and we are an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), we cut out the middle step in the buying process. Your quote is generated from your registration plate where our automatic system evaluates various factors of the vehicle. We also ask for you to provide your phone number as your quote is sent via text message. Our quotes are free, 100% no obligation and last for ten days. Are there any hidden charges or deductions that will come out of my quote?

Which payment methods do you use?

All payments are made within 24 hours of collecting the vehicle and will be made via BACS bank transfer.

What will you do with my bank details?

We need your bank details so that we can pay you. The only details we require are your account number and sort code which can only be used to make payments into your account.

What should I do if my payment hasn’t cleared?

You should receive BACS payment within 24 hours, however, if you haven’t received payment within this time frame please get in touch and one of our advisors can help you.

WCan you pay me before my vehicle is collected?

No, we cannot make payments prior to collection. Upon collection, we need to make sure that the vehicle is both there and is as described. As soon as we have collected and the checks have been made, we will make payment within 24 hours.

Will you try to haggle on collection?

No, our prices are guaranteed subject to inspection. As long as the vehicle has been accurately described we will pay you the full price quoted.

Do you price match?

It is our aim to offer all of our customers the best price for their vehicle. As we are the end buyer of your vehicle, we are able to cut out the middleman such as scrap car comparison websites to make you more money. What if I receive a higher quote somewhere else?

If you think you have received a higher quote, let us know and we will try our best to beat it. It’s my first time selling a vehicle for scrap, what do I need to do?

Here at Scrapping A Car our aim is to make the process of selling your vehicle as easy as possible. Read our frequently asked questions below, if the question you have isn’t there, please get in touch with us by calling 0203 870 2545 and we will be happy to help.

What do I need to provide on the day of collection?

On the day of collection, we need you to provide the following; all sets of vehicle keys, photo ID, a utility bill that is less than 3 months old, the V5C (log book) if you have it, and any paperwork you may have for the vehicle.

Are there any specific documents I need?

We need you to provide the following documents; the V5C, any vehicle history that you have such as MOTs, service history or receipts of work, alongside your ID and utility bill as previously mentioned.

Do I need to fill out the paperwork?

We want to make the process of scrapping your vehicle as hassle-free as possible. With over 30 years industry experience, our team have extensive knowledge of the whole process. Both you and the collector will need to complete and sign section 9 of the V5C document, however, it will then be your responsibility to send it to the DVLA. If you have any questions, our collection team will be more than happy to help you.

What paperwork do I need to complete?

Upon collection you will need to complete section 9 of the V5C as mentioned above. If you are unable to provide this, the DVLA will need to be informed by the registered keeper that the vehicle has been sold and who it was sold to.

What do I do with the V5C log book?

You and the collector need to fill out section 9 of the V5C and then you need to send this to the DVLA. If this is not done, you could be fined and risk being liable for any future tickets or fines. Once your vehicle has been scrapped, you will receive a Certificate of Destruction (COD) to prove that your vehicle has been destroyed in line with government guidelines.

What if I don’t have a V5C log book?

If you don’t have a V5C, don’t worry you can still scrap the vehicle. You can either apply for a replacement via a V62 form or you can scrap the vehicle and have a COD issued. If you choose to scrap the vehicle, proof of photo ID and proof of ownership of the vehicle may be requested from the collector.

What happens with the previous car history?

If you have any of the previous car history, this should be provided to us when the vehicle is collected. This may include old MOTs, service history or receipts of completed work.

Do I need to handover all of the paperwork?

Yes, we need you to provide any paperwork that you have to our collector. As mentioned, once section 9 of the V5C has been completed, you will be responsible for sending this part of the paperwork to the DVLA.

Will I get a receipt from the collector?

You won’t receive a receipt from the collector; however, you will receive an email confirmation from Scrapping A Car. Once your car has been scrapped you will also receive a Certificate of Destruction as proof it has been destroyed.

Why do I need to show my ID?

In October 2013, the Scrap Metal Dealers Act was introduced to stop rogue traders. As part of this, when scrapping a vehicle, your photo ID is now required to legally identify you. Our collector will ask for your photo ID and a utility bill upon collection, this is a standard procedure when scrapping your vehicle.

What is a waste carriers license?

A waste carriers license is issued by the Environmental Agency and applies to anyone who transports, disposes, buys or sells waste or arranges for others to do so on their behalf. This is in order to protect the environment and prevent fly tipping. As a result, all of our collectors have an up to date waste carriers license.

What is a Certificate of Destruction?

A Certificate of Destruction (COD) is an official DVLA document that you will receive once your car has been depolluted and recycled in line with government guidelines by an Authorised Treatment Facility, such as Scrapping A Car.

Can the price be changed based on an incorrect appraisal?

Our quotes are provided subject to inspection. If you have accurately described your vehicle, your quote is guaranteed. However, if the vehicle is not as described, the price can be recalculated.

Do I need to contact the DVLA?

Yes, you do but this is a simple process. Once your vehicle has been collected, you need to complete section 9 of the V5C and send it to the DVLA. If you don’t have this, the registered keeper will need to inform the DVLA in writing. It’s important that you do this to prevent being fined.

How do I declare my vehicle as off the road (SORN)?

You can declare your vehicle as SORN online, over the phone, or at the post office. Once you declare the vehicle as SORN, you must keep the vehicle off all public highways.

Can I get my insurance reimbursed?

Once your vehicle has been collected, you can inform your insurer that you wish to cancel your insurance and that your car has been sold for scrap. If you pay annually you may be eligible for a reimbursement, however, you will need to contact your insurer directly for full details and to check if you are eligible.

What if my insurance company requires a Certificate of Destruction (COD)?

Once your vehicle has been disposed of you will receive a Certificate of Destruction. You may then choose to pass this on to your insurance company.

How do I get my tax reimbursed?

You will need to inform the DVLA once your vehicle has been collected and the V5C has been filled out to see if you are eligible for a tax reimbursement. You will need to contact them directly for further details and to check eligibility.
